AMC Theaters will announce that it has postponed its scheduled reopening yet again, according to a source who attended an internal meeting on Wednesday.
The announcement will be the second change in reopening plans for the chain, as it had originally planned to reopen on July 15 before moving that date to July 30. This is coming on the heels of rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in parts of the United States and the indefinite delay of Christopher Nolan’s
“Tenet”.
AMC, the country’s largest theater chain, will be joining its competitors with the move. Regal Cinemas and Cinemark Theaters, the second and third largest domestic cinema chains respectively, have also postponed their previously scheduled July reopenings.
According to the source, AMC also plans an additional round of corporate layoffs.
UPDATE: AMC has officially announced the postponement, saying they plan a reopening in “mid to late August” and that this “reflects currently expected release dates for much anticipated blockbusters”.
